Helping
Manufacturers Stay on Track
Manufacturing firms often employ dozens or even hundreds of machines
and tools to make their products. And just like the different mileage
checkups that you perform on your car, each of these machines and tools
requires periodic maintenance ranging from simple lubrication to a complete
overhaul. How can these companies know when it is time to perform an "oil
change" on a machine? One way is to keep reams of paper records.
A far better way is to fire up Tool-Track, a new database system from
SRI Ltd.
Machine and Tool Maintenance Tracking
Tool-Track is a user friendly Windows based application for tracking maintenance,
repair histories and costs, revision levels, and Engineering Change Numbers
(ECN) for molds, presses, or virtually any other tools or machines used
on the manufacturing floor. Designed for users with little or no computer
experience, Tool-Track allows the shop maintenance or engineering staff
to determine which machines and tools are due for maintenance, the type
of maintenance to be performed, and the estimated time and cost to perform
the maintenance. Over 1,000 machine and tool records can be accommodated,
each having a unique maintenance schedule or program. Tool-Track also
provides status information on all of the currently running jobs for each
machine and tool, including the hours and cycles left to complete the
current jobs. Shop personnel can compare the projected job end date with
the time remaining before the next required maintenance, and can make
scheduling and staffing decisions accordingly.
Automatic Updating
One key to Tool-Track's unique features is its ability to interface with
real time production monitoring systems, such as those marketed by Oxbridge
Information Systems, Mattec, or Plantstar. In this way the running hours,
cycles and job end data can be updated automatically, providing an up
to the minute assessment of impending maintenance deadlines. Where no
real time production system is available, shift end data can be input
manually, or by using an ASCII file generated by a text editor or spreadsheet
program.
Repair Histories and Inventory
In addition to maintenance, Tool-Track allows the user to track tool and
machine repairs and changes to revision levels or ECNs. Labor, materials,
and vendor costs can be input for each tool or machine repair. Parts used
on repairs or maintenance are automatically decremented from the parts
inventory. Tool-Track then provides reports summarizing repair costs for
each tool or machine. Repair costs can also be summarized over the entire
lifetime of a tool, covering all revision and ECN levels. These detailed
analyses identify abnormally high repair costs by revision level or outside
vendor.
